“The show that laughs in the face of conflict” as appropriately described by Bill Bailey.

The Pixelpush team was called in by Nigel McCulloch from The Down Low Concept and tasked to develop a 20 second title sequence that conveys the show’s humour. With quite a good length of time to work with, we needed to come up with a concept that is fast-paced, recognisable, and culturally referential.

This was a good learning opportunity for us to get deep into both cultures, so the team had to dive deep into the history books to gather a diverse range of reference material. We had to look far and wide to feature a mix of common stereotypes and lesser known trivia to keep the video interesting.

Treatment

This 20 seconds title sequence for TVNZ comedy show, Patriot Brains, captures the essence of the show which is about the rivalry between both countries - New Zealand and Australia. It’s intriguing and enticing.

To highlight the comedic nature of the show, we showcase glimpses of events and commonly known topics in an exaggerated and quirky way. A fast pace/snappy edit between a series of action scenes will leave an impression of constant fighting and struggles between both parties.

The visual treatment for this opening title has a mix of digital and handmade elements. The use of real props give a tactile human quality whereas digital design elements help create dynamic and sleek transitions. We aim to strike a balance between these two.

Script

The rivalry between Kiwi and Aussie is real. There’s genuine ‘hatred’ between each other that is so ingrained as if nothing else matters. Both teams want to be the best by stepping on top of each other.
